theme park on a gorgeous stretch of coastline. Highlights include an
aviary, butterfly pavilion, botanical gardens, aquarium/sea turtle
nursery, replica Mayan village, stables, dive center, small zoo, some
Mayan ruins, and an underground river for snorkeling. If you go, be sure
to stay for the evening show featuring folk dancers and Mayan ritual

of money. Website

trip.

Cenotes
– Under the Yucatan Peninsula there are layers of limestone and
underground water systems. Every so often, these underground waters
surface creating deep and often very beautiful springs called cenotes
which are great for swimming, snorkeling, and sometimes diving. There are
many cenotes that are worth seeing as you head down the coast. All will
be advertised by signs on Highway 307 on your way to Tulum. The most
famous is Hidden Worlds Cenote, which was featured in an IMAX film.
Located 1 hour from Puerto Morelos, it can also be seen on your Tulum day
trip.

Ka’an Bioreserve – The Sian Ka’an (“where the sky is born” / pronounced
see-an caan) is a 1.5
million acre Bioreserve and is named a World Heritage Site by the United
Nations. It covers 10% of the land in Quintana Roo and 100 km of
coastline. Hundreds of species of birds, fish, plants, and other wildlife
– many endangered – call this reserve home. There are also 27 Mayan ruins
(unexcavated) linked by a unique canal system. This is one of the last
remaining undeveloped stretches of the North American Coast and is nature
in its rawest form. Several kinds of tours, including bird-watching and
kayaking trips are offered through the visitor’s center. Other privately
run tours also exist. Plan on using a tour company to view this
natural wonder, as the roads are not
always passable without 4 wheel drive. Fishing for bonefish is also
popular. Located approximately 1.5-2 hours from Puerto Morelos.
