Welcome to Puerto Morelos!  This tranquil fishing town is a great location for relaxing and enjoying its quiet waters.  The waves that gently roll onto Puerto’s shore are protected by the Great Maya Reef, Mexico’s most recent addition to its National Parks and the second largest reef in the world.   Just 500 meters from shore, the Great Maya Reef is a wonderful haven for magnificent fish and coral that can be explored by snorkeling or diving.  This barrier also calms the waves makig the beaches in Puerto Morelos ideal for families.

 

Puerto Morelos’ central location makes it a great hub for seeing all that the Mayan Riviera has to offer.  Puerto Morelos is 15 minutes south of the Cancun Airport.  It is also 25 minutes from the exciting towns of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.  The Mayan Ruin sites of Tulum (1 hour), Coba (1.5 hours), Chichen Itza (2 hours), and Ek Balam (1.5 hours) can be easily viewed on a day trip.

While it is impossible to list all of the exciting adventures awaiting you.  Puerto Morelos and The Mayan Riviera are unmatched in offerings of watersports, snorkeling and diving, golf,  fishing, ecotourism, Mayan ruins and culture, shopping, spas, and world class cuisine of every genre.  There are hustling nightspots and quiet beaches, making it a destination for everyone to enjoy -- However you choose to fill your time.

Restaurants

Puerto Morelos has an awesome selection of restaurants -- the best of any small town on the coast!  From a corner cafe to award-winning gourmet cuisine, there is something for everyone.  Enjoy the freshest fish, lobster, Yucatan, Oriental, Italian, Argentinean, and Continental menus.  Plus, you are only minutes away from the incredible selection of restaurants that Cancun and Playa del Carmen have to offer.

 

Grocery Stores

Puerto Morelos has a local grocery store in the town square named Casa Martin.  It supplies all of the basics including paper goods, milk, meat, produce, sodas, liquor, beer, water, etc. There are also butcher and produce stores across the main highway in the 'colonia' area of Puerto Morelos.

 

Every Wednesday morning, there is fresh produce market in the town square that offers great fruits and veggies located in the town square.

 

There are several stores in Cancun that offer top quality meats, cheeses, a wider selection of goods, and lower prices.  You may want to consider making a trip to stock up if you plan on eating in often:

  • Superama Closest large grocery. Just 5 minutes north of the Cancun Airport on Highway 307.

  • Sam’s Club – Membership Required.  Located next to Superama.

  • La Europea – Huge selection of wines, liquors, and specialty meats and cheeses. Located in front of Superama.

  • Costco – Membership Required.  Has a great selection of Meats and an excellent selection of cheeses, wines, liquors, beers, imports, etc. Located in Downtown Cancun.

 

 

Money Exchange

There are several money exchanges in Puerto Morelos.  Most also sell numerous types of phone cards for telephones, pay phones, and prepaid cellular phones.  A typical exchange rate is 10 pesos per U.S. Dollar.

 

 

Automated Teller Machines

There are two ATM machines that accept debit and credit cards in Puerto Morelos.  (Most stores, vendors, and restaurants only accept cash.)

 

 

Telephone Service

There are many public payphones in town that accept international calling cards, which can be purchased at multiple locations in town.  You can also rent a cell phone from our office to use during your stay.

 

 

Internet Access

Puerto Morelos has several computer/internet cafes that offer high speed internet services.

 

 

Laundry Service

There are several laundry mats (Lavandarias) in town.  All offer drop off service.  The price is generally 12 pesos/kilo and your clothes are ready for pick-up in 24 hours.

 

Things to do & places to see

 

In Puerto Morelos:

  • The Beach!: Puerto Morelos has lots of public beach accesses to our wonderful, white sand beaches. A beach cleaning machine regularly drives by to collect any seagrass or litter, so you'll find our beaches combed and in great condition! Our reef also blocks big waves making our beach great for families with little ones.
  • The Puerto Morelos Town Square!: The town square (just in front of our office building) is the hub of activity in Puerto Morelos and hosts various events, festivals, and bazaars. Check with our Community Events Calendar to see what's going on during your stay.
  • Spa & Massage: Enjoy the privacy of in-home treatments or the luxury of great spas!

    • Martina's Oasis Spa offers wonderful spa/massage options, either in her spa or at your place.
    • Ceiba del Mar Resort & Spa opens its spa to outside guests for 5 star treatments.
  • Ya'ax Che Botanical Garden: This Garden has a wonderful collection of the Yucatan Peninsula’s plants and flowers on display and labeled in English, Spanish, and Latin.  There is also a nursery, an orchid garden, a reproduction of a chiclero, a Mayan house, and an archeological site.  A nature walk through the mangroves makes for excellent bird watching…and occasional monkey sightings.  A tree-house lookout also provides an awesome view.
  • Water Sports:
    • Snorkeling: No one has truly experienced Puerto Morelos until they see the spectacular views that lie beneath its waters.  The fish and coral are outstanding!
    • Diving: Explore the world’s second largest reef.  Instruction courses available. 
    • Fishing: Nothing like spending a day catching great fish.  Trolling and Deep Sea Fish Boats Available.  Barracuda, Grouper, and Billfish are all up for grabs!
  • Crococun Regional Zoo: Great Zoo features a collection of crocodiles and other indigenous animals.  Offers immensely informative tours (available in English) with a private guide for your group and hands-on opportunities to hold baby crocs, pet the reptiles, feed the deer, monkeys, and turtles.
  • ATV Tours: Tour Puerto Morelos' Jungle, Mangroves, Mayan Villages, and a Cenote on ATVs.
  • Shopping:
    • Alma Libre Bookstore: This is the largest English-language bookstore on the coast!  Over 20,000 titles.  Excellent source for Area Guide Books.  Trade in your used books for credit.  Open October – April.
    • Artisan Shops: In and around the town square you'll find many artisan and handicraft shops.
    • Jungle Market: Open each Sunday during high season, you'll find lots of Yucatecan Food and Handicrafts. Located on Calle 2 in the Zona Urbana (West of Highway 307).
  • Restaurants: Attention All Foodies!!! Puerto Morelos may be small, but there is no shortage of great food! There are lots of local places to have great tacos, fish, and yummy Yucatan dishes. You'll also find lots of great international choices: Asian, Italian, German, Argentinian, and on, and on. You will find a current Restaurant Guide in the Guest Information Book we'll place in your rental unit.
  • Selvetica: Selvetica Adventure Park offers canopy and bike tours of nearby jungle and mangalar.  Home to the longest zip line circuit in North America, Selvetica allows you to see the dense jungle from above – a pretty awesome sight!  They also have mountain bike paths and a cenote for swimming.  Zip Lines, Bike Tour, Cenote, Lockers, and Lunch is included with admission. 
  • Cenotes: Under the Yucatan Peninsula there are layers of limestone and underground water systems.  Every so often, these underground waters surface creating deep and often very beautiful springs called cenotes which are great for swimming, snorkeling, and sometimes diving. Just across the highway from Puerto Morelos, is a Cenotes Route that takes you into the jungle and to many beautiful cenotes.  

 

In Cancun & Along the Mayan Riviera:

  • Cancun: The great city of Cancun is just a 20 minute drive from Puerto Morelos. Cancun's Hotel Zone and the Downtown area are filled with malls, markets, and tourist activities.
    • A ferry can also be taken from Cancun to reach Isla Mujeres Island -- Ferry Schedule
  • Playa del Carmen: Located just 25 minutes south of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen is definitely worth visiting.  Its main street, 5th Avenue, is teeming with shops, art galleries, and restaurants.  Plan on spending at least one afternoon enjoying the town and having dinner at one of its great restaurants.
    • Playa is also the location to ride the ferry to reach Cozumel island -- Ferry Schedule
  • Cinepolis VIP Movie Theatre: Looking for a great rainy day activity?  Cinepolis is not just any theatre – it has large leather recliners and a great food.  Most movies are in English with Spanish subtitles.

  • Golf: Whether you brought your clubs along or want to rent some for the day, there are several fine courses available for public play.  We have additional information on area courses in our office and are happy to arrange a tee time.
  • Xcaret: About 30 minutes south of Puerto Morelos, Xcaret is the Mayan Riviera’s most heavily advertised tourist attraction.  Once a sacred Mayan city and port, Xcaret (pronounced ish-car-et) is now a 250 acre ecological theme park on a gorgeous stretch of coastline.  Highlights include an aviary, butterfly pavilion, botanical gardens, aquarium/sea turtle nursery, replica Mayan village, stables, dive center, small zoo, some Mayan ruins, and an underground river for snorkeling.  If you decide to go, be sure to get there early to get through all of the activities and stay for the evening show featuring folk dancers and Mayan ritual reenactment – it’s worth staying to see.  We think it is a neat place to visit, especially if you have children, but plan to spend the day and lots of money.
  • Xel-Ha: Near the Tulum Ruins, Xel-Ha waterpark offers a great day of relaxing in the water, snorkeling, and riding floats through the mangrove. People often spend several hours at the Tulum Ruins and then the rest of their day at Xel-Ha.
